4 Reasons Why Traditional Signwriting Is Still A Force To Reckon With

Eevi Jarvela

Traditional signwriting (the art of creating signs using paint and brushes) was once the dominant means of creating sign displays. However, with the advent of digital technology, most of today's sign displays are made via digital prints. However, to this very day, traditional signwriting is still alive. It is practiced by experienced signwriters that learned the skilled trade years ago, as well as their younger apprentices.

Overall, there are 4 reasons why traditional sign writing is still viable today:

Traditional signs are unique

First, traditional signs are unique by their own right. They are a stark contrast to printed designs, vinyl wraps, engravings or embossed signs. They have that classic, traditional look that is just not available with modern digital signage. In a way, traditional signwriting is an art by itself, and by extension, traditional signs are little pieces of art too. With that said, if you like the look of traditional signs, there's only one way to get it on your signage: through a traditional signwriter.

Many custom details/extras are available

Although digital signage has great advantages, traditional signwriting has its perks as well when it comes to design formulation. Since it's done by hand, a signwriter can employ many manual design variations of their choosing. Some of the extras you can get with traditional signwriting include shading, colour layering, bordering, fonts, and calligraphy.

Can be done on any material or surface

Another great feature of traditional signwriting is that your signs can be created on any type of material, be it metal, rock, a building's wall, paving, vehicles, timber etc. Signwriting can also be carried out on flat as well as uneven or otherwise tricky surfaces that may be hard to work on through other technologies.

Traditional signage is easy to modify

Last but not least, traditional signwriting is easy to modify. Unlike digital prints where alteration requires the installation of a whole new sign, with signwriting small changes like dates, contacts, locations, prices, and other details can be carried out with ease. The signwriter only needs to erase the affected part and paint it afresh. This makes traditional signs cheap, quick, and more convenient to modify or update.

The art of traditional signwriting can be used to create numerous sign displays: business signs, vehicle signage, property signage, indoor signage, posters, etc. Though it's not very common, you can still find a few remaining traditional signwriters that will create an authentic traditional sign for your business.
