Tips for Maintaining Your Business' Neon Light

Eevi Jarvela

Neon lights are a popular choice for businesses, particularly those running during nighttime hours. Simply buying one isn't enough, though; you have to be prepared to properly care for neon lights so they will last many years. Also consider the impression that a dirty and poorly maintained neon light makes on prospective customers. It gives a very dim view of your business and won't bring you any new clients. If you use neon signs in your restaurant or any other business, here are some tips to keep them in good condition.

Keep them lit at all times

At first glance, it looks counter-productive, but it's actually one of the best things you can do for your sign and your business. If you continually switch your neon sign on and off, the neon sign transformer will wear out pretty quickly, and you'll have to seek a replacement. If you're worried about energy costs, don't be. Neon lights use very little electricity to operate and are much more efficient than incandescent or fluorescent lighting. Furthermore, neon signs use electrodes and not heated filaments like regular light bulbs, so you don't need to worry about it burning out or starting a fire.

Select a proper location for your sign

Choosing an appropriate location for the sign in your business premises will go a long way in ensuring it lasts. Don't limit your considerations to the most visible place to attract customers. If you own a bar or any other business with a large amount of human traffic, then keep them high up and out of reach. Many may be curious about them and touch them. Inevitably, your sign will be damaged since the glass tubes are very delicate. Nicotine stains are a headache to clean, so try to install your sign in areas where people don't smoke.

Clean it regularly

Neon lights accumulate dirt and grime over time, so clean them to ensure they don't get too filthy. Always unplug your neon light before you begin the cleaning, or you risk getting electrocuted. Don't forget that neon tubes are fragile, so be very careful when handling your sign. Use a soft bristle brush or a soft cloth to clean the surface dust then check for any grime or stains. Nicotine stains are a common culprit. For these, use an ammonia-based solution to gently clean the glass. Exercise caution when using ammonia cleaners, and make sure they only touch the glass. Ammonia may damage paint and cause it to peel off when it gets on other parts of your neon sign.
